Biography of Shaykh Sohail Hasan
His family
Shaykh Sohail Hasan comes from a family of great scholars, his father Shaykh AbdulGhaffar Hasan, his grandfather Shaykh AbdusSattar Hasan, and great grandfather Shaykh AbdulJabbar Umarpuri (student of Mian Nazeer Husayn Dehlwi) were all great scholars. Also Shaykh Sohail Hasan’s elder brother Shaykh Suhaib Hasan is a world renowned scholar.
His education
Shaykh Sohail Hasan was born in 1951 in Lahore. He started later on his studies in the “Niya Madrasah” of Jamate Islami.
In 1957, his father Shaykh AbdulGhaffar Hasan left Jamate Islami with some of his companions due to differences with Molana Mawdudi. Shaykh AbdulGhaffar Hasan moved to Lailpur (Faisalabad) upon the advise of Shaykh Hakeem AbdurRaheem Ashraf and Jamiyah Ta’limat Islamiyah was established there.
Shaykh Sohail Hasan did his primary education in a school of Jamate Islami. Due to some financial difficulties of Jamiyah Ta’limat Al-Islamiyah, Shaykh AbdulGhaffar Hasan moved to Sahiwal where he stayed for a year, so Shaykh Sohail Hasan also studied in Sahiwal for year.
Afterwards Shaykh AbdulGhaffar Hasan moved to Karachi to teach Hadith in Dar Al-Hadith Rehmaniyah, so Shaykh Sohail Hasan’s school education carried on in Karachi.
In 1964 Shaykh AbdulGhaffar Hasan was invited to teach Hadith in Madinah University while Shaykh Sohail Hasan was in the 8th Jamaat of school. His elder brother Shaykh Suhaib Hasan was already in Madinah University as a student.
In November 1965, Shaykh Sohail Hasan moved with his parents and younger brothers to Madinah. He joined there Dar Al-Hadith where he started to learn Arabic and Islamic studies. A year later he joined Madinah University in Mutawasit level and he completed his Thanviyah, and afterwards he completed his BA and MA from Kuliyah Ad-Da’wah and Usul Ad-Deen of Madinah University.
During his studies in Madinah University, he married in 1975 and after completing his MA in 1981 from Madinah University, according to the wish of his mother, he returned to Pakistan.
His teaching
After graduating from Madinah University, Shaykh Sohail Hasan was sent on behalf of Madinah University to teach in Jamiyah Ta’limat Islamiyah Faisalabad. Shaykh AbdulGhaffar Hasan also returned to Pakistan at the same time. Shaykh Sohail Hasan taught in Jamiyah Ta’limat Islamiyah for 3 years under Shaykh AbdulGhaffar Hasan’s supervision.
In 1984, this position from Madinah University ended, then the ministry of Islamic Affairs appointed him to teach in the International University of Islamabad (Al-Jamiyah Al-Islamiyah Al-Aalamiyah Islamabad). He first taught in Kuliyah Ash-Shariah and was also given administrative functions. He travelled in this time with a group of students to KSA and Egypt.
In 1990, he was appointed Assistant Professor in Idarah Tahqiqat Islami Islamabad in the department of Quran Hadith. With teaching, he would also do some research work. This Idarah Tahqiqat Islami was under the International University of Islamabad.
In 1993 Jamiyah Imam Muhammad ibn Sa’ud Riyadh offered scholarship to teachers of Madinah University and Shaykh Sohail Hasan was also offered this opportunity so he took it and went to Riyadh and obtained his Phd 4 years later.
After obtaining his Phd, Shaykh Sohail Hasan returned to teach in Idarah Tahqiqat Islami as associated Professor.
Afterwards with his work of verification in Idarah Tahqiq Islami, he was also teaching in the International Islamic University of Islamabad in the department of Hadith under the presidency of Dr Fazal Ilahi

Among his works:
a) “As-Sunnan wal Athar fi Nahi ‘an Tashabuh bil Kuffar”: This was the MA paper in Arabic of Shaykh Sohail Hasan, it was published by Dar As-Salaf
b) “Mujam Istilahat Hadith”: 424 pages, Urdu book on the definitions of Hadith terms, published by Idarah Tahqiqat Islami Islamabad.
c) “Mawsu’ah Ahadith Al-Mu’amalat”: In Arabic, under publication process.
d) “Ilm Jarh wa Ta’dil”: 459 Urdu book on Jarh wa Ta’dil, published by Idarah Tahqiqat Islami
e) “Molana AbdulGhaffar Hasan, Hayat wa Khidmat”: Shaykh Sohail Hasan wrote this book alongside his elder brother Shaykh Suhaib Hasan on the biography of their father in 597 pages, published by Maktabah Islamiyah.
f) Shaykh Sohail Hasan verified and added to the book “Intikhab e Hadith” of his father Shaykh AbdulGhaffar Hasan. This verified edition was published by Maktabah Islamiyah in 311 pages.
g) Shaykh Sohail Hasan introduced and did Tahqiq of the Urdu translation of his father Shaykh AbdulGhaffar Hasan of a book of Dr Mustafa Siba’i on social characters. The name of the Urdu translation is “Humare Mu’asharti Akhlaq wa Kirdar”. Shaykh Syed Kaleem Bukhari and Shaykh Farhan Elahi also played a role in the publication of this book published by Dar Al-Fikr Islami in 299 pages.
h) Shaykh Sohail Hasan verified the “Maqalat” of his father Shaykh AbdulGhaffar Hasan complied by Shaykh Syed Kaleem Husayn Shah Bukhari, published by Maktabah Dar As-Salaf in 511 pages.
